Punchbowl Aged Care, developed by Deicorp and designed by Nordon Jago Architects, introduces a fresh approach to aged care, redefining comfort and care in Australia. Completed in July 2023 for the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese, St Nicholas Church, this modern facility, located 17 kilometers west of Sydney, was carefully planned over several years.

Departing from the typical institutional feel, this 80-bedroom development offers a welcoming, home-like atmosphere, blending seamlessly with its surroundings thanks to the natural slope of the terrain, which allows for a three-level structure within an eight-meter height limit. The architects crafted the façade to appear as a series of townhouses, utilizing a mix of materials such as bricks, concrete, and aluminum battens to create a dynamic look, while the interior, designed by TSD, provides a comforting environment with varied living areas, private gardens, terraces, and amenities that emphasize natural light and connections to the outdoors.

Sustainability is central to the design, with established trees retained to enhance the lush environment and protect local biodiversity, alongside large terraces, raised garden beds, and pergolas that diffuse sunlight, supporting both environmental and economic goals. Biophilic principles are evident throughout, with features like north-facing windows to maximize daylight, cross-ventilation, and energy-efficient elements that reduce the need for artificial lighting.

A dedicated recreation building connects the church to the residences, offering a versatile space for community gatherings and events while minimizing noise for residents.

This development sets a new standard in aged care, combining innovative design with sustainability to create a comfortable, community-focused environment that reflects thoughtful use of materials, energy efficiency, and respect for natural landscapes.
