A New Era of Recreation: Campbelltown Billabong Parklands

Two months ago, the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands officially opened, marking a significant milestone for the Campbelltown community. Goldfish & Bay proudly led the hydraulic design of this transformative project, ensuring that every water feature not only reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence but also supports sustainable and efficient water management.

Spanning a four-hectare site, this landmark attraction features a 1.1 million-litre artificial lagoon, a children's pool, and an interactive splash play area, all thoughtfully crafted to reflect the natural beauty of the Dharawal National Park. The Billabong Parklands offers a year-round destination, operating as a serene parkland during cooler months and transforming into a lively aquatic precinct when the weather warms up.

This new space is more than just a place to cool off—it serves as a hub for fostering healthy, connected communities. The design encourages play, learning, creativity, and social interaction across all age groups, providing various settings for community events and recreational activities.

Despite facing two significant setbacks—the challenges of the COVID pandemic and nearly two years of continuous rain—the team’s dedication never wavered. The construction also involved overcoming complex geotechnical conditions, such as reactive clay substrate, and navigating kilometers of intricate plumbing. Yet, through these obstacles, the vision of a vibrant, connected community space remained at the forefront.

The project was brought to life through the collaboration of the Campbelltown City Council, state and federal governments, and a dedicated team of professionals. It received $31 million in funding from the Western Sydney Liveability Program, with an additional $3.6 million contributed by the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Fund.

As we reflect on the opening, we’re proud of the positive impact the Campbelltown Billabong Parklands has already had on the community. Working alongside Campbelltown City CouncilAT&LLandscape Solutions, and Arcadia Landscape Architecture has been an absolute pleasure! Together, we’ve created a space that beautifully honors the cultural heritage of the region and promotes a strong, connected community.
