Engineering the Future: Meet Joanna Sheng, Mastermind of Fire Safety at Goldfish & Bay

Fire is unpredictable, powerful, and relentless—qualities that demand precision and creativity to manage. For Joanna Sheng, a Fire Services Engineer at Goldfish & Bay, harnessing this force isn’t just her job; it’s her passion. With experience in both contractor and consulting roles, Joanna brings a unique blend of hands-on practicality and technical expertise to every project she takes on.

Joanna’s journey began with a simple question: How do things work? With roots in a culture steeped in Chinese traditions, she was shaped by values of diligence, humility, and responsibility. Hands-on activities like origami and, yes, LEGO fueled her love for creating things from scratch. (There must be something about LEGO—our engineers don’t just build with it; they’re practically molded by it. Maybe it’s time we add “LEGO fanatic” to the job description!) These small moments in childhood ignited a curiosity that blossomed into a career of precision and purpose.

In a traditionally male-dominated field, Joanna is setting the industry ablaze with her innovative solutions and meticulous approach. After earning a Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sydney, Joanna honed her expertise in fire protection systems. Her diverse portfolio spans residential, industrial, commercial, and high-rise developments, showcasing her ability to tackle challenges across all sectors. Her ability to design and consult on innovative fire safety systems while meeting stringent compliance standards has established her as a trusted expert in the field.

At Goldfish & Bay, Joanna thrives on solving problems that demand both precision and creativity. From debating fire safety regulations with colleagues to crafting forward-thinking solutions, she approaches each challenge with meticulous care.  “Even the smallest tasks are part of a much bigger picture,” Joanna shares. Her efficient, detail-oriented, and perfectionist work style is shaping spaces that prioritize both safety and innovation.

For Joanna, knowledge is her fuel. She stays sharp by engaging with FPAA news, LinkedIn discussions, and industry events, always searching for the next spark of insight. Her guiding philosophy, “Be better than I was yesterday,” drives her to continuously improve—not just for herself, but for her team and the clients she serves.

Joanna isn’t just an engineer; she’s proving that fire safety isn’t about extinguishing flames—it’s about igniting change. We’re proud to have her leading the way, showing that the future of engineering is as creative and unstoppable as the forces she helps control.
