In early April, our Electrical team at Goldfish & Bay came together for a focused session on the revised AS/NZS 1158.4:2024 standard—Lighting for Roads and Public Spaces: Pedestrian Crossings—during a highly valuable Lunch & Learn presented by Ben Brady.
The 2024 update replaces what was once a highly prescriptive, complex standard with a performance-based approach that puts pedestrian safety and practical design front and centre. With a clear shift towards vertical illuminance, reduced glare, and simplified calculation grids, the revised standard streamlines compliance while improving real-world outcomes.
Ben unpacked the rationale behind the changes, walked us through design implications using AGI32, and discussed how to apply the updated guidelines in both new and retrofit contexts. We also reviewed compliant luminaire options—like the OP-SX and MX PRO 1—that deliver required performance without the need for tilt, aiming, or outreach.
These sessions are part of how we keep our team technically sharp and specification-ready. It’s not just about staying compliant—it’s about designing safer, smarter public environments.
Thank you to Ben Brady for delivering a session that was both clear and directly applicable to our work.
